During a formal hearing on Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington mistakenly stated that former President Donald Trump “incited an erection.”
This slip of the tongue occurred in response to Republican Rep. Dan Bishop of North Carolina. Bishop had criticized Hunter Biden for refusing to testify before Congress, asserting that such defiance demanded action.
Jayapal, addressing the House, remarked, “While I appreciate the passion from my friend across the aisle [Rep. Bishop] and the outrage, I think we are all outraged about many things. But if we are going to talk about outrageous things that have happened and/or things that have never happened, let’s talk about the fact that President Trump incited an erection.”
Realizing her error, Jayapal laughed and quipped, “Maybe that too.”
“You can talk about that too, I guess,” Bishop retorted.
Jayapal then corrected herself, stating, “the president incited an insurrection.” She further noted Trump’s two impeachments as reasons for outrage.
Bishop later posted about the incident on X, asking, “President Trump did WHAT? Never a dull day here in the House.”
The context of this exchange was a Congressional hearing discussing whether to hold Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, in contempt of Congress for his refusal to comply with a subpoena. Hunter Biden made a brief unexpected appearance during a committee hearing on the same day.
This gaffe by Jayapal was not the first of its kind. In January 2021, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York made a similar mistake. He said, “Senators will have to decide if Donald John Trump incited the erection,” before correcting himself to say “insurrection.”
