ClickOnDetroit News notes the four siblings—ages 5, 7, 8, and 11—were waiting for a school bus at about 7:30 a.m. when a woman in a white van stopped and enticed the children to get in her van, promising to take them to school.
Detroit Police Chief James White told Detroit News that two officers pulled over Binder’s vehicle after driving through a red light.
Alert officers noticed the children’s unusual demeanor and asked the driver, “Are these your children?”
Several children shook their heads to indicate, “No.”
It was over for Binder when she could not answer questions regarding the children’s schools.
Police now know the van Binder was driving was stolen.
Binder has a significant criminal record, including a drug-related conviction and multiple convictions for retail fraud.
This week prosecutors charged her with four counts of kidnapping, four counts of child enticement, unlawful imprisonment, and one count of receiving and concealing stolen property, reports 62CBS Detroit News.
A judge set bail for $5 million.
The court set hearing dates for Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.
