Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) verbally sparred with NBC News host Chuck Todd in a “Meet the Press” episode broadcast Sunday.
The Republican senator and program host sparred almost from the beginning while discussing the special prosecutor appointed to investigate classified documents held by President Biden.
“Do you approve of Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint a special counsel to look into the Joe Biden classified documents?” Todd asked Johnson.
The Wisconsin senator replied he wasn’t a fan of special prosecutors but opined U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland probably felt he had no choice. After appointing a special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump’s possession of classified documents, fairness required one to investigate a similar Biden act.
“I did join 32 of my colleagues in calling for one for Hunter Biden because we had a whistleblower that said that Attorney Weiss doesn’t have the resources to do the type of investigation required,” remarked Johnson. “You know, I never held public hearings. We just did our investigation and then issued a report. If there is evidence of wrongdoing, then we should refer that to the Justice Department.
“Then the investigation should take place.”
Johnson added it’s difficult to criminally charge or convict Democrats in Washington, D.C.
“So, from my standpoint, the more important imperative here is for the public to understand exactly what is happening inside government, inside of the administration,” he added.
Todd responded by saying it sounded like Johnson was saying that when the DOJ declines to prosecute a politician, the senator still wants the information released in order to politically damage the investigated individual.
“No, Chuck, because a lot of political wrongdoing does not necessarily result in a crime, but it’s still wrong and the public needs to understand exactly what happened,” Johnson replied. “So, you know, take a look at the political wrongdoing on the part of the FBI. They went to Twitter and they were censoring information.”

The senator continued with details about the 51 intelligence officials who described the Hunter Biden story as a disinformation operation. He noted the FBI persuaded social media platforms to censor the New York Post’s reporting on the laptop story weeks before the 2020 general election.
“All that information was censored and suppressed,” declared Johnson. “And the FBI, in their actions, impacted the election to a far greater extent than anything that Russia or China ever could have hoped to have accomplished.”
Johnson said those are facts, and that’s all he is interested in — the truth.
“Senator, senator, do you have a crime that you think Hunter Biden committed because I’ve yet to see anybody explain,” Todd asked. “It is not a crime to make money off of your last name.”
The Wisconsin Republican responded by asking Todd if soliciting prostitutes who were potential sex trafficking victims is a crime.
“Is that a crime?” Johnson asked, “because Chuck Grassley and I laid out about $30,000 paid by Hunter Biden to those types of individuals over December of 2018, 2019, about $30,000.”
