On Thursday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) broke down in tears on the floor of the House of Representatives, following a vote in which fellow rep. and “squad” member Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was removed from her seat on the House Foreign Affairs committee.
Omar was booted from her spot on the House Foreign Affairs Committee due to her past antisemitic comments, including remarks in which she argued American support of Israel was “all about the Benjamins.”
Omar was voted out of the committee by all House Republicans on Thursday afternoon, prompting Tlaib to rail against the decision as she broke down in tears and ignored warnings that her time was up.
“Where are the free speech warriors today?” Tlaib asked. “The hypocrisy is obvious to the American people, you are showing who you all are really.”
In the clip, Tlaib begins crying and continues to speak, ignoring multiple warnings that her time had expired.
“I know that Congresswoman Omar will not be silenced,” Tlaib yelled over the warnings. “To Congresswoman Omar, I am so sorry sis, that our country is failing you today through this chamber!”
Tlaib’s microphone was turned off after she continually refused to acknowledge that her time had expired, but scattered applause could be heard from Democrats.
The vote was split along party lines as 218 Republicans voted to remove Omar from the committee while 211 democrats voted for her to remain.
The Republican resolution said that Omar had “brought dishonor to the House of Representatives” with her antisemitic comments and had “disqualified” her from a spot on the Foreign Affairs committee.
In addition to Tlaib, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) alleged that Republicans were being hypocritical and “targeting women of color.”
Omar was one of three representatives who were removed from their committees following Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) election to the seat. The other two, Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA), were removed from their spots on the House Intelligence Committee — Schiff due to his support of the largely debunked Steele Dossier and Swalwell due to his relationship with Chinese spy Christine Fang.
