A Texas congressman was rebuked for rudeness after slipping in a few barbs in a CNN broadcast with Erin Burnett.
Burnett asked Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) if his support for Kevin McCarthy’s election as House speaker was unbreakable.
“I don’t know if you’re aware, young lady,” Nehls responded to the network reporter, “but I am also a member of the House Freedom Caucus.”
He declared proudly he is an “America First” patriot.
“And, I have said to my friends, my colleagues in the Freedom Caucus, that I don’t believe that this is the battle we should be waging,” Nehls continued. “I think the real battle starts when we start drafting legislation and policy in the 118th Congress under a Speaker McCarthy.”
The Texas Republican explained that viewers have to understand there are 35-40 members of the House Freedom Caucus. With a thin margin of 222 Republicans, the next speaker can only afford to lose four Republican votes if he hopes to pass any legislation. Nehls reasons that is what makes the House Freedom Caucus more relevant than ever.
“Kevin McCarthy understands that, in order to pass anything in the 118th Congress, he’s going to need support and the endorsement from the House Freedom Caucus,” Nehls informed Burnett.
The reporter requested clarification of an earlier remark before the interview ended.
“I assume when you called me ‘young lady,’ it was a compliment,” Burnett said.
Nehls responded that, of course it was.
“This is my first time on the Clinton News Network,” he added.
“That, I will say was a bit, in my opinion, was rude,” Burnett responded, “but I’m glad you are talking to me and I will treat you with the respect you deserve.”
