Former president and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has shared his thoughts on new House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was chosen by House Republicans to lead the lower chamber on Wednesday.
“I just want to congratulate Mike Johnson. He will be a great Speaker of the House, and we were very happy to help. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a tremendous leader. He’s a tremendous man,” Trump said.
The U.S. House of Representatives appointed Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson as its new Speaker on Wednesday, putting an end to an intense and unpredictable 22-day competition. The selection journey was tumultuous, witnessing several Republican stalwarts and upstarts competing for this esteemed title.
“He comes from a wonderful place, Louisiana … He’s going to be a great speaker – I think you’re going to be very proud of him,” he added.
This triumph for Johnson signifies a unanimous decision for a Republican speaker. Such a unanimous choice hasn’t been observed since Ohio Representative John Boehner’s election in January 2011. The assembly acknowledged former House Speaker and California Representative Kevin McCarthy, along with other distinguished Republican members, with standing ovations and applause.
Johnson’s journey to the Speaker’s position witnessed numerous unforeseen events, much like McCarthy’s trajectory. Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer initially clinched the conference nomination but later withdrew from the race. His withdrawal came in the wake of a surge of negative feedback from his party and disapproval from Trump. Before Emmer, Ohio Representative Jim Jordan encountered difficulties in garnering support from mainstream Republicans.
Following Emmer’s exit, the contest underwent several voting rounds. Eight contenders were in the mix, eventually narrowing down to Florida Representative Byron Donalds, Johnson, and a last-minute participant, California Representative Kevin McCarthy, fresh from his ejection from the position. Donalds’ endorsement played a pivotal role in strengthening Johnson’s final nomination.
