Former United States Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) criticized President Joe Biden for his condemnation of the Customs and Border Patrol agents involved in using whips and horses to prevent immigrants from entering the United States.
Gabbard’s comments: After Biden spoke to the press on Friday and expressed that the agents “will pay” for their treatment of immigrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, Gabbard appeared on Fox News’ Watters World and criticized Biden’s comments as “absolutely wrong.”
Gabbard was unflinching in her criticism of President Biden, warning that his comments condemning the agents before the completion of an official investigation could taint the democratic process.
“[H]e’s absolutely wrong, and he needs to apologize to the American people for saying what he said,” Gabbard told host Jesse Watters.
“And here’s why: He’s somebody who’s been very outspoken as being against autocrats, autocracies, dictators,” she explained. “But what he essentially did was act as judge, jury, and executioner for these Customs and Border Patrol agents on horseback.”
“How can they expect to have any kind of fair outcome to an investigation when the President of the United States has already declared their guilt and that they will be punished,” Gabbard went on.
“And the bigger issue that this points to, which is one that we all need to be concerned about, is that if we are no longer a country of laws, if we are no longer a country where we know we will be presumed innocent unless proven guilty, then we don’t have a democracy,” she stated. “And that’s the increasing feeling that a lot of us have is we are losing our democracy and moving closer and closer to what essentially is an autocracy.”
How we got here: The security of the U.S.-Mexico border has long been a controversial issue in America, but events reached a boiling point over the last couple weeks as thousands of mostly Haitian immigrants flooded over the border town of Del Rio, Texas seeking asylum from poor conditions in their home countries.
The mayor of Del Rio, Texas, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) publicly called out the Biden Administration, asking for aid to handle the crisis.
Then last week, images emerged showing Customs and Border Patrol agents on horseback, carrying whips and scurrying up and down the riverbank to prevent immigrants from crossing into the United States.
Though the agents can be seen swinging the whips near the agents, the photographer who took some of the now viral images, Paul Ratje, made it clear that he never saw the agents strike any of the immigrants, and the images can be “misconstrued.”
Nevertheless, in his remarks to the press on Friday, Biden publicly condemned the agents involved, calling the images “horrific” and promising that the agents involved “will pay.”
Worth noting: Gabbard was not the only one who reacted to Biden’s remarks. Texas Governor Greg Abbott told Fox News’ Chris Wallace that if Biden follows through on his promise to punish the agents, then he will re-hire them himself to work for the state of Texas.
“If they are at risk at losing their job at a president who is abandoning his duty to secure the border, you have a job in the state of Texas,” Abbott declared. “I will hire you to help Texas secure our border.”
