House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) astounded social media users with her statement about China, made after her return from Taiwan.
“When I was a little girl, I was told at the beach if I dug a hole deep enough, we would reach China,” Pelosi said at a briefing, “so we’ve always felt a connection there.”

That simple bromide was told to beach-going children for decades but Pelosi may be the first to have actually believed it. An Oregon State University graphic shows how many thousands of miles through solid rock and molten magma Pelosi would have had to dig using her plastic beach shovel before reaching China.
Earth science is not rocket science, and almost all children knew how absurd that parental statement was. Using that as a basis for feeling a connection with China may explain social media users’ reactions.
“Nancy Pelosi says she’s always felt a connection to China because when she was a little girl her parents told her if she kept digging a hole at the beach eventually she’d reach China,” remarked Outkick founder Clay Travis. “We are truly led by imbeciles.”
Turning Point’s Benny Johnson laughed when he heard it.
“PELOSI: “When I was a little girl, I was told at the beach if I dug a hole deep enough we would reach China,” commented Mr. Johnson in a Twitter post. “So we’ve always felt a connection there.”
“LOL what?”
The Twitter account @LoganClarkHall was incredulous upon hearing the remark from the woman second in the presidential line of succession:
“You’re telling me this person was our best choice to visit Taiwan?”
Pelosi’s visit to the island nation of Taiwan angered the People’s Republic of China, which claim Taiwan is part of its country.
“Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances,” Pelosi said in a statement. “The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo.”
