Former President Donald Trump met with former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on Saturday, for the Mar-a-Lago Trumpettes gala, which sparked a flurry of speculation as the former president likely prepares to choose a running mate.
Ramaswamy, 38, and his wife Apoorva were spotted entering the gala together with the 77-year-old former president and former first lady Melania Trump at the “Golden Evening for a Golden President” event.
“Vivek is here. He’s smart. He’s sharp. I was happy to get him the hell out of the race. And as soon as he got out, he endorsed me. And he’s got a tremendous future,” Trump proclaimed as he welcomed Vivek onto the stage Saturday evening. “He’s young, and he’s smart. Melania and I were just saying, ‘You don’t get sharper than this.’”
Ramaswamy then took to the podium and issued praise on Trump as well, warning that “we’re in the middle of a war in this country” and need him back in the White House, listing off several issues such as inflation and the border and saying that Trump is the best candidate to deal with them.
During Ramaswamy’s 11-month bid for the Republican presidential nomination, he attempted to appeal to the MAGA voter base, by expressing his desire to move Trump’s agenda forward and rarely criticizing the former president.
Since exiting the race, he has repeatedly joined the former president while campaigning and has refused to issue any statements on the possibility of being Trump’s vice presidential candidate.
Trump has previously commented on a few possible vice presidential picks, name dropping Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem in that interview but saying that he won’t make a public decision for a “while,” and saying that there are “a lot” of people who could potentially appear alongside him on the ballot.
“It’s gotta be who is going to be a good president. You always have to think that,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s “Sunday Morning Futures” earlier this month, referring to his vice presidential pick. “I have a lot of good people. We have a lot of really good people.”
While Ramaswamy was originally considered a longshot for vice president, his recent appearance with Trump at Mar-a-Lago sparked rumors on social media about his prospects.
“Donald Trump US President and Vivek Ramaswamy as the Vice President would cause record levels of meltdowns on here,” user Pavvy G posted on X.
Conservative podcast host Monica Crowley wrote, “President and Mrs Trump hosted Vivek and Apoorva Ramaswamy last night at Mar-a-Lago. Things are moving.”
Trump remains the overwhelming favorite to win the Republican nomination, currently only facing contest from former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and has won every contest between the two of them. Most recently, Haley lost by nearly 30 points in Nevada to “none of these candidates,” as Trump was not included on the ballot.
