Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has come out swinging in defense of Vice President Kamala Harris’ controversial price gouging plan.
The plan, which has sparked heated debate among economists and policymakers, aims to tackle rising costs in housing and groceries through federal intervention.
Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Whitmer dismissed critics of Harris’ proposal, suggesting they were “reading too much” into the policy details.
The governor emphasized Harris’ focus on “corporate responsibility” and her commitment to making housing more affordable and healthcare more accessible.
“We know that Kamala Harris is going to be focused on building up more affordable housing,” Whitmer stated, highlighting the vice president’s efforts to protect and expand healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
She contrasted this approach with President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle the healthcare law, which Whitmer claims would have affected a million Michigan residents.
The governor painted Harris’ economic vision as an “opportunity economy” designed to address the struggles of everyday Americans.
“She sees every American, she understands what people are struggling with and wants to help you keep more money in your pocket,” Whitmer asserted.
NBC host Kristen Welker, however, pressed Whitmer on the practicality of the price gouging proposal, echoing concerns raised by critics who view it as potentially ineffective or even counterproductive.
When asked if the plan was “anything more than a gimmick,” Whitmer doubled down on her support.
“I think it speaks to Kamala Harris’ values that she wants consumers to keep more money in their pockets and she wants Americans to be able to get ahead,” Whitmer responded.
She emphasized the need for a balance between fostering business growth and protecting consumers from exploitation.
The debate over Harris’ economic plan comes at a time when Americans are increasingly worried about the state of the economy.
A recent Pew Research Center study revealed that only 23% of voters view current economic conditions as excellent or good, while 36% rate them as poor.
Critics of the price gouging plan have been vocal in their opposition.
Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell described the policy as “hard to exaggerate how bad” it is.
Fox Business host Larry Kudlow and former Obama economist Jason Furman have warned that targeting corporations on prices could lead to unintended consequences, including potential black markets and higher costs for consumers.
Furman, in particular, expressed concern about the plan’s implications.
“The good case scenario is price gouging is a message, not a reality, and the bad case scenario is that this is a real proposal,” he told The Washington Post.
As the debate rages on, the Harris plan has become a lightning rod for discussions about the role of government in regulating markets and protecting consumers.
With supporters like Whitmer championing the proposal and critics warning of potential pitfalls, the coming weeks are likely to see intense scrutiny of the vice president’s economic vision.
