IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley Wednesday corroborated reports that U.S. Attorney for D.C., Matthew Graves, “refused to bring charges” against Hunter Biden for tax evasion.
“The Justice Department allowed the president’s political appointees to weigh in on whether to charge the president’s son,” Shapley testified during a House Oversight Committee hearing.
The committee conducted its hearing as part of an investigation of allegations that the Department of Justice politically interfered with an IRS investigation of Hunter Biden.
“After U.S. Attorney for D.C. Matthew Graves, appointed by President Biden, refused to bring charges in March 2022, I watched U.S. Attorney Weiss tell a room full of senior FBI and IRS senior leaders on October 7, 2022, that he was not the deciding person on whether charges were filed,” Shapley said.
U.S. Attorney Graves donated $1,500 to Biden’s campaign in the months of April and May 2020, according to campaign reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission. Critics say it lends credibility to concerns of bias.
The two donations by the federal prosecutor were made during the 2020 primaries. Graves contributed $500 in April 2020 and gave an additional $1,000 in May, FEC records reveal.
White House officials defended Graves’ independence, advocating for a shift in focus toward more pressing matters.
The hearing brought to light not only these contributions but also allegations of purposeful delays and a lenient plea deal regarding Hunter Biden’s tax offenses.
Joseph Ziegler, a special agent and an experienced member of the IRS’ Criminal Investigation Division, had earlier come forward as an anonymous whistleblower in the Hunter Biden case.
Ziegler testified before the House Oversight Committee, expressing concerns about potential political influence and ethical misconduct. He suggested appointing a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden.
Ziegler’s concerns were echoed by IRS supervisor, Gary Shapley, who testified that prosecutors concealed evidence and delayed actions during the investigation.
This included a reluctance to pursue search warrants and avoiding questioning Hunter Biden’s father, President Biden.
