The president’s national security spokesman emphatically exclaimed the U.S. will not investigate Nord Stream pipeline explosions allegedly conducted by Ukraine.
A Washington Post report revealed a European ally notified the Central Intelligence Agency three months in advance of Ukraine’s sabotage of Russia’s gas pipelines.
Information about the brazen attack was included in disclosures on Discord that U.S. prosecutors claim were leaked by Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira.
The leak may explain wy National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters the U.S. is comfortable allowing European investigations to determine the facts about the pipeline’s explosion.
The Daily Caller further reported:
White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday at a White House briefing that the U.S. would not be investigating the Nord Stream Pipeline after a report revealed the U.S. knew of the attack months in advance.
A close U.S. ally, whom The Washington Post kept anonymous, alerted the CIA in June of 2022 that they were aware of a plan hatched by the Ukrainian military to send a small diving squad that reported directly to the Ukrainian Armed Forces commander in chief to blow up Nord Stream 1, The Post reported, citing the leaked Pentagon intelligence documents.
“Is the U.S. actively investigating –” a reporter asked before Kirby cut in and said, “No.”
“Why not?” the reporter pressed.
“There are three European countries that have embarked on independent investigations of this and we’re comfortable in their ability to take a hard look at this and to come up with conclusions.”
Western analysts and officials jumped to put the blame on Russia following the September attacks, though the new intelligence could strengthen claims that Moscow was not responsible for the sabotage. President Joe Biden called the attacks “a deliberate act of sabotage” and pledged to “get to the bottom of exactly what … happened,” The Post reported. Officials initially suggested Russia carried out the attacks to cut off European energy supplies through the winter in a bid to blackmail Europe into loosening sanctions on Russia.
The intelligence report, which came from a single Ukrainian source, shows that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was kept in the dark about the plan and could plausibly deny responsibility, according to The Post. Instead, Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi oversaw the plans, according to the report.
The CIA shared the intelligence report in June with Germany and other European countries, according to the report.
