The story: White House press secretary Jan Psaki indicates that nations should not revise global green energy commitments despite increasing energy prices and fuel shortages.
The details: The U.K. is reportedly in the midst of an energy crisis. It currently imports approximately 51% of its energy from France, which has threatened to reduce exports severely. Responding to the growing crisis, the British government deployed military tankers to resource thousands of empty gas stations.
China, Syria, and India have reported large-scale blackouts. China’s energy production challenges could potentially destabilize the fragile peace in the region. In the U.S., natural energy prices have increased 150% in the last year. UPI reports that prices at the pump have risen to the highest levels in seven years.
However, at today’s daily briefing, when White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked if the administration is concerned that energy price increases and shortages will impact green energy pledges ahead of the Glasgow Climate Change Summit in December, Psaki replied, “We certainly hope not.” According to a Breitbart report, “Psaki asserted, the climate crisis was more important than cheaper fuel, calling global warming ‘one of the greatest national security crises the president sees.’”
Psaki noted that Ida, a category 4 hurricane, is in part responsible for higher gas prices in the United States. Supporting the progressive line, Psaki stated, “Certainly, we all want to keep gasoline prices low, but the threat of the crisis — the climate crisis — certainly can’t wait any longer.”
In response to growing concerns regarding energy shortages and price hikes, Psaki said, “We’re continuously monitoring. We’ll look to take additional steps as needed.”
