Woke Coffee Shop Closes Down After Demands From Even-More-Woke Employees

The Daily Wire reports that a “woke” coffee shop in Philadelphia is closing after employees “revolted against the owners and demanded they ‘redistribute’ the company.”

The coffee shop, Mina’s World, was located in West Philadelphia and said to be a “hangout spot for people of marginalized identities,” according to Bon Appetit.

Sonam Parikh, who managed the business with co-owner Kate Egghart, told Bon Appetit, “Mina’s World was the city’s first coffee shop owned and operated by queer, trans people of color.” Reportedly, the shop was named after the owner’s cat.

According to the Daily Wire, Parikh, who in the past blasted other coffee shops for failing to “protect their Black and trans employees” and for not creating safe places for marginalized customers, is now facing the ramifications of waving the woke flag since the shop opened in 2020.

The Philadelphia Inquirer notes the shop is closing amid internal disputes and financial troubles.

A “Minas World Workers” Instagram page includes multiple postings of complaints — primarily against shop owners. Employees, feeling entitled, felt free to publicly charge their employers with “manipulation, abuse of power, exploitation, anti-blackness, ableism.”

Not satisfied that their point was well made, employees posted a “List of Grievances” and demanded “immediate payment [restitution]” and ordered owners to “redistribute the business.”

Following the woke code, Egghart and Parikh apologized in an Instagram video, which, according to the Daily Wire, has since been removed from the Mina’s World account.

Libs of TikTok noted that surrendering to wokeism is not a sound business strategy:

“Egghart and Parikh’s surrender to the outrage shows a point proven again and again — no matter how many times you bend the knee to the mob, you will never be able to adhere to their insatiable standards for progressive enlightenment,” Libs of TikTok remarked. “No matter how much of an ‘ally’ you are, you will never be safe from becoming just another trophy head on the wall of wokeism.”

Nevertheless, a Libs of TikTok post noted the owners said:

“We’re going live as part of a radical accountability process. We’re complicit in the gentrification and anti-blackness on 52nd Street. We put our community at risk with our presence as well as our workers. With the guidance of the workers and Black and Brown Workers Collective, we’re trying to raise funds to buy the business and turn it over to our staff.”

Not surprisingly to anyone who has completed Economics 101, Mina’s World was listed for sale days later.

In an Instagram post, Mina’s World said it did not “have enough money to continue operating” and closed its doors.

The Daily Wire reports that according to the workers, “Kate Egghart’s mother, Eunjoo, is the owner of the building … [and] ‘refused’ the request to redistribute the business.”

Employees attempted to raise $200,000 via a GoFundMe drive to purchase the building and take over the business. Efforts fell far short as only $11,000 was raised by Wednesday morning.

Despite receiving substantial media attention in its first year of operation — Complex reported that Mina’s World is a “lovely and queer and trans owned” shop — they now suffer the sting of the phrase: “If you go woke, you’ll go broke.” Larger businesses such as Disney, Netflix and CNN can testify that the slogan is true.
