An Ohio woman who grew up in foster care adopted the baby of her husband’s late ex-wife to keep the child out of the foster care system, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Christie Werts, 48, adopted the infant Levi after the ex-wife of her husband Wesley died, the report noted.
Christie and Wesley Werts blended their families after they met five years ago. The couple together had several children.
Wesley’s ex-wife, the mother of his two children, Austin and Dakota, succumbed after a prolonged battle with addiction. Following her passing, the couple decided to adopt her newborn Levi and legally did so in January.
“When I heard about Levi, without hesitation I said we should take him,” Werts said. “I myself was a foster kid and, although for the most part I had a great experience, I did not want him going to foster care.”
“My husband did not really speak to the biological mother’s family often, but she had Levi on a Monday and passed away that Friday,” she added.
The family sold their home and rented a place in Texas so they could foster the little boy in order to then adopt him, a process that took over a year to complete, according to a report from Breitbart.
“We prayed for him, so here was the moment we feel God had planned,” she said.
On August 23, Christie celebrated Levi’s second birthday by sharing video footage of him both in the hospital and at their home.
“Happy second birthday, my son,” she said. “I wasn’t in the room when you were born, I wasn’t there for your first cry, but I was there.”
“It was all part of God’s beautiful plan,” she added. “Even though you unknowingly experienced tragedy, today we celebrate that you came into our lives.”
