A woman fell to her death Friday after attempting to scale a 30-foot border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, according to San Diego police.
She successfully climbed over a shorter 17-foot wall before attempting the taller border barrier in Otay Mesa, according to a Fox 5 report.
The report noted a 162% increase in falls and severe and fatal injuries over the last three years, citing data supplied by the Consulado General De Mexico.
“People more and more are facing traumatic life-altering injuries when they fall, and they injure themselves, or death as the case of this woman,” immigration volunteer organizer Pedro Rios told the San Diego Fox affiliate.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, the report noted. The woman’s identity or nationality has not been released yet.
“They anticipated, I believe, that border falls would occur, and that that would be a deterrent, and we don’t see that actually happening,” Rios added.
Risk of injury or death has done little to slow surges of illegal aliens crossing the southwest border. Customs and Border Patrol reports more than 1.97 million encounters there in fiscal year 2023 (Oct. 2022 to July 2023).
The invasion of illegals has overhwelmed officials tasked with capturing and detaining them that some sectors have begun wholesale releases of detainees, according to a Fox News report.
Footage from San Diego depicts numerous migrants disembarking from buses, including individuals from China and Pakistan.
In one video segment, a migrant may be heard asking a Border Patrol agent about his newfound freedom.
“You’re free to go on and do wherever you want,” the agent replies to the illegal alien’s question. “You’re free.”
When the migrant further questions, “It’s no problem if I go to Chicago?” the agent assures him, “You can do whatever you want.”
