Family Trio Accused in Brutal Death of 7-Year-Old Girl as Prosecutors Reveal Chilling Texts, ‘Systematic Cruelty’

Three women from three generations of the same family are facing criminal charges in connection with the death of a young girl who prosecutors allege was subjected to prolonged abuse and torture inside a Long Island home, a case authorities say involved extensive injuries, digital evidence, and missed warning signs.

Suffolk County prosecutors say 7-year-old Jor’Dynn Duncan was found unresponsive on December 29, 2025, after Emily Kelly, the fiancée of the child’s incarcerated father, called 911 reporting that the girl was in cardiac arrest.

Emergency responders transported her to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, where she was pronounced dead. Officials later determined she died from a severe untreated infection caused by extensive injuries.

An autopsy reportedly documented approximately 90 injuries on the child’s body, prompting a homicide investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Authorities arrested and indicted Kelly, 50; her mother, Barbara Renner, 75; and Kelly’s daughter, Elyssa Seymore, 24.

Prosecutors allege each played a role in what they described as “prolonged torture, abuse, and brutal murder” of the child. All three have pleaded not guilty, according to The Blaze.

“This was not an alleged single act of violence,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said. “It was months of alleged systematic cruelty and sadistic abuse, meticulously documented. The child was allegedly left to die while these defendants watched her deteriorate. No child should ever endure such horror, and we will seek justice for Jor’Dynn.”

Investigators say the abuse allegedly began after Child Protective Services placed Jor’Dynn in Kelly’s care in December 2024 at her request.

By April 2025, Kelly had obtained full custody and guardianship of the child.

Court filings and prosecutors allege digital evidence recovered from Kelly’s phone and cloud accounts includes videos, images, and messages documenting ongoing abuse, including physical restraint and a lack of medical care beginning in early 2025.

According to CBS News, one alleged message included instructions about avoiding visible injuries, stating, “You can’t hit her face. You gotta hit her body if you going to hit her. That’s another thing we gotta hide.”

Officials say the child also missed approximately 40 days of school, with Kelly allegedly providing repeated explanations including illness and family emergencies.

Investigators now believe the absences may have been used to conceal injuries, according to People.

Kelly is charged with second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Renner faces charges including second-degree manslaughter and child endangerment, while Seymore is charged with unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Kelly’s attorney, John LoTurco, called the death a “tragic accident, not the result of any malicious intent,” and said she “deeply cared for Jor’Dynn and treated her as her own daughter.”

Renner’s attorney, Danielle Coysh, denied involvement, citing her client’s medical condition.

“She has no criminal history, was not the caregiver of this child, and did not cause her tragic death,” she said.

Officials in Suffolk County are now reviewing potential systemic failures, including missed warning signs tied to school absences and child welfare oversight.

“How was this child placed in the hands of somebody who could be this unfit and this abusive?” County Legislator Rebecca Sanin said. “How could the school not see her for 40 days over the course of a year and not ask questions?”

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said Child Protective Services had limited involvement and noted that custody decisions were made through the court system.

“The child’s placement was done by a judge,” Romaine said. “As the case is prosecuted, we will act on any information that comes out that suggests to us that improvements can be made.”

Neighbors said they were shocked by the allegations and described the child as quiet and familiar in the community, with small memorials now placed outside the home.

The case remains under active prosecution as investigators continue reviewing extensive digital evidence and assessing whether additional warning signs were missed by institutions involved.
