The 2024 election is not yet in full swing, but already seven senators and 19 members of the House have announced they will not seek reelection.
The list slightly favors the Republicans, who will be vying for 10 open Democratic seats in the House and five in the Senate.
Several lawmakers are retiring after serving multiple terms. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) has served in Congress for thirty years. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OH) has served 27 years and Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) has served 22.
In announcing his retirement, Burgess said: “I wasn’t looking for another job, because I love the one I have serving the people of Eastern Ohio in the U.S. House. This was an extremely difficult decision.”
Several legislators, such as Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), and Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) are stepping down due to health concerns. Wexton has a progressive neurological disorder and Kildee was recently diagnosed with cancer.
In announcing his intent to step down, Kildee said, “After spending time with my wife, children, and grandchildren and contemplating our future, the time has come for me to step back from public office. This was not an easy decision to make. But I know it’s the right one for me and for my family.”
