Chris Spatola, an ESPN college basketball analyst whose career took him from West Point to military service and Duke’s championship basketball program, died unexpectedly Monday at age 47.

ESPN announced his death Tuesday. Duke University also confirmed the news through a statement from the family of former Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” ESPN said.

The network remembered Spatola as a thoughtful and passionate analyst who earned the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and college basketball fans.

Spatola joined ESPN in 2015 and appeared on game broadcasts and studio programming. He also contributed to SiriusXM’s college sports coverage during his broadcasting career.

Before entering broadcasting, Spatola was a four-year basketball standout at the US Military Academy.

The guard scored 1,543 points across 111 games for Army, averaging 13.9 points per contest. He also finished his college career with an 87 percent free-throw percentage and earned second-team All-Patriot League honors in 2001 and 2002.

Spatola graduated from West Point in 2002 with a degree in English and a minor in environmental engineering.

Following graduation, he served as a graduate assistant with Army’s basketball program before completing five years of military service as a battery commander and executive officer.

Spatola deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and rose to the rank of captain. He received the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his performance during the operation and the Army Commendation Medal for his leadership as a company commander.

After completing his military service, Spatola joined Krzyzewski’s Duke staff in 2007 as a graduate assistant and head team manager.

He was promoted to director of basketball operations in 2008, overseeing responsibilities including team travel, summer camps and other daily activities surrounding the program.

Spatola remained with Duke through 2012. During his time on the staff, the Blue Devils won four ACC tournament championships and captured the 2010 NCAA national championship by defeating Butler.

He also worked with USA Basketball as a court coach during a period in which the men’s national team won gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Trending Politics reported.

Spatola was married to Krzyzewski’s daughter, Jamie. The couple had three children.

“There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola,” the Krzyzewski family said.

The family remembered him as a devoted husband and father who served his country and remained an important part of the Duke basketball community.

Spatola’s death prompted tributes across college basketball for a broadcaster whose experience as a player, decorated Army officer and championship staff member shaped his work during more than a decade in sports media.
