A lethal synthetic opioid known as carfentanil, originally designed as an elephant tranquilizer, has emerged as America’s newest and deadliest drug threat, with overdose deaths skyrocketing by more than 700 percent in just one year.
This alarming surge comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to tackle the nation’s ongoing border and drug crisis.
According to recent CDC data from the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, carfentanil-related fatalities jumped from 29 deaths between January and June 2023 to a staggering 238 deaths during the same period in 2024.
Experts warn these numbers could be even higher, as not all deaths have been reported.
Fox News, citing the new data from the CDC, reported that Carfentanil, which first appeared in 2016 before temporarily receding, has returned with devastating force.
The drug is approximately 100 times more potent than fentanyl, which is itself 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The resurgence of this super-potent opioid adds another layer of complexity to America’s already dire drug crisis.
Fox explained that in the previous year, illegally manufactured fentanyl and its variants were responsible for nearly 70 percent of all U.S. overdose deaths.
The ease of mass production has contributed to carfentanil’s comeback, making it an increasingly popular choice among drug users despite its extreme dangers.
This development presents a significant challenge for the incoming administration’s drug control efforts.
Resist the Mainstream reported back in July that carfentanil along with medetomidine, an animal tranquilizer, were found within New York City’s drug supply.
Despite the threats caused by these new drugs, officials from New York’s Health Department bragged about their “harm reduction” programs.
The New York Post outlined that these programs often involve giving addicts clean needles and allowing them to use substances such as cocaine and heroin, rather than helping them recover from the addiction through rehab.
Health Department spokeswoman Rachel Vick said in a statement to the outlet: “All New Yorkers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and to be met with non-judgmental care, as we know that stigma drives people away from services.”
“Our goal is to reduce overdose death and improve lives by mitigating the risk of death for people who use drugs and ensuring that everyone has access to high-quality harm reduction, treatment, and recovery services when, where, and how they need it.”
The crisis extends beyond carfentanil.
The Western Journal reported that in May 2023, major metropolitan areas like Philadelphia faced another deadly fentanyl variant known as “tranq,” a dangerous mixture of fentanyl and animal sedative.
These evolving drug threats highlight the urgent need for comprehensive border security and drug control measures.
While President Biden has pursued an indirect approach to the drug crisis, Trump has pledged to address both border security and drug trafficking head-on.
As the president-elect continues his search for a DEA administrator, the stakes continue to rise with each passing day.
Trump, who will take office on January 20, 2025, faces mounting pressure to fulfill his campaign promises regarding border security and drug control.
For families affected by America’s devastating opioid epidemic, his inauguration can’t come soon enough.
