Self-help guru Marianne Williamson has reentered the 2024 presidential race, having previously announced the suspension of her campaign.
Williamson’s decision to return to the political arena was shared through a video statement on X. She believes President Biden presents a vulnerable target in a potential matchup against former President Donald Trump and attributes her decision to challenge Biden to this perceived electoral weakness.
“As of today, I am unsuspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States,” Williamson said. Her initial decision to suspend her campaign was due to lagging behind in what she described as the “horse race.”
However, Williamson now claims that there are more critical issues at stake beyond electoral competitiveness, which have caused her to jump back into the fray.
“Right now, we have a fascist standing at the door. Everybody’s all upset about it. Well, we should be upset about it. But we’re not going to defeat the fascist by — well, by what? What is President Biden offering?” she asked. “What is he saying beyond, ‘You know, the economy is doing really well?’”
“We’re still in this. Let’s do this. This is serious,” she added. “We need to say to the American people, ‘we see your pain,’ and we need to say to Donald Trump, ‘we see your B.S.’”
Williamson’s campaign had initially been suspended on February 7, without her endorsing another candidate. Her foray into politics began in 2019 when she first ran for president against Biden and other Democratic contenders. She announced her intention to challenge Biden once again in early 2023, positioning herself as a persistent figure in Democratic politics.
Williamson joins Rep. Dean Phillips in challenging Biden’s bid for the Democratic nomination. Phillips has criticized the Democratic Party’s reluctance to explore other options, but both Phillips and Williamson trail significantly behind Biden in polls.
