Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) countered claims by former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WA) about a second Donald Trump presidency dooming the United States. He said a second term for President Joe Biden would be far worse.
“I understand why people don’t like what [Trump] does and says at times,” Graham said during an interview with CNN’s State of the Union, “but in terms of actions and results, he was far better president [than] Biden. And if we have four more years of this, Liz Cheney, then we won’t recognize America and the world will be truly on fire.”
The South Carolina senator’s comments come after Cheney gave an interview to CBS Sunday Morning where she said Trump’s potential primary win and reelection would bring the United States closer to a “dictatorship.”
Cheney also said a Republican majority in the House in 2025 would be a “threat,” particularly if the 2024 election heads to the lower chamber for a vote.
“We’re facing a situation with respect to the 2024 election where it’s an existential crisis, and we have to ensure that we don’t have a situation where an election that might be thrown into the House of Representatives is overseen by a Republican majority,” Cheney said.
“I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party. But the Republican Party of today has made a choice, and they haven’t chosen the Constitution,” the former congresswoman added. “And so I do think it presents a threat if the Republicans are in the majority in January 2025.”
