Former President Donald Trump responded to the news that this Academy Awards suffered record-low ratings, warning that it will get much, much worse if Hollywood doesn’t shape up.
“What used to be called The Academy Awards, and now is called the ‘Oscars’—a far less important and elegant name—had the lowest Television Ratings in recorded history, even much lower than last year, which set another record low,” Trump said in a statement, as reported by the Daily Caller. “If they keep with the current ridiculous formula, it will only get worse—if that’s possible.”
“These television people spend all their time thinking about how to promote the Democrat Party, which is destroying our Country, and cancel Conservatives and Republicans. That formula certainly hasn’t worked very well for The Academy!” he added.
As The Daily Wire reported on Monday, the Oscars suffered a whopping 58% decline in viewership with less than 10 million people tuning in to watch the broadcast:
The Oscars award show on Sunday night set a record for how few people tuned in to watch the Hollywood spectacle.
The number of total viewers dropped roughly 58% year-over-year from the then-record low in 2020, according to The Wrap. The number of total viewers plummeted from 23.6 million total viewers in 2020 to just 9.85 million total viewers on Sunday night.
The drop was even worse among the prized demographic of adults ages 18-49.
“Those initial numbers for the 2021 awards show, which was taped at Union Station in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC from 8-11:17 p.m. ET, represent a decline of 64% in the key demo and 58% in overall viewers compared to 2020’s results, but a more accurate comparison can be made when finalized data comes in Tuesday,” The Wrap reported.
Prior to the show, producers for the Oscars admitted that politics undoubtedly pushes people to tune out. None of that stopped people from airing their political opinions on stage, most of which focused on police brutality and racial equality. The night, however, had its share of classy, inspiring moments, such as when movie mogul Tyler Perry rebuked the far-left claims that “all cops are bad.”
“In this time, with all of the internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way, the 24-hour new cycle … it is my hope that all of us would teach our kids, and I want to remember: just refuse hate. Don’t hate anybody,” Tyler Perry said.
“I refuse to hate someone because they are Mexican or because they are black or white or LBGTQ,” he added. “I refuse to hate someone because they are a police officer. I refuse to hate someone because they are Asian.”
