Trump Gaining in New York City Suburbs Over Crime, Illegal Immigration: Report

A surprising political shift is unfolding in New York City’s suburban regions, as voters in traditionally left-leaning areas are increasingly aligning with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

This change could signal a broader national realignment, with Trump’s law-and-order message resonating amid growing concerns over crime, immigration and the economy.

Long considered political battlegrounds, the suburban counties of Nassau and Suffolk on Long Island made notable Republican gains in the 2022 midterm elections.

The New York Post reported that despite twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans in these areas, both counties flipped red, leaving political analysts speculating whether this trend reflects a larger shift across the country.

The outlet further noted that Trump’s emphasis on crime and immigration mirrors the 1968 presidential campaign of Richard Nixon, who won over the “hard hat” vote by addressing growing concerns about lawlessness.

Trump secured a slim victory in Suffolk County in the 2020 presidential election, beating President Joe Biden by fewer than 250 votes.

However, by 2022, Republicans saw sweeping success in both Suffolk and Nassau counties in local and congressional elections, an indication that Trump’s messaging is resonating with suburban voters who feel disillusioned by Democratic leadership.

“The real catalyst was the crazy way that the Democrats were managing both Washington and Albany,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican.

His comments came during an interview with Fox News, as outlined by the Post Millennial (TPM).

“When you talk about cashless bail, when you look at our insecure borders,” Blakeman added.

“We’re spending billions of dollars on people who have been here for 15 minutes rather than on hospitals, infrastructure, schools. People are fed up.”

Blakeman’s remarks underscore a sentiment that is gaining traction among suburban voters: frustration with policies from both the Biden-Harris administration and state-level Democratic leadership.

These voters are increasingly drawn to Trump’s critiques of President Biden’s handling of immigration, particularly the claim that “millions of illegals” have crossed the southern border under his watch.

Trump’s focus on restoring public safety through law-and-order measures has also bolstered support for the Republican presidential hopeful.

“It’s the suburban voters who are listening to Trump’s message,” Blakeman continued.

“I think the Democrats are the ones that are helping us the most, and I think moderate Democrats and independent voters want to vote Republican now because they’re fed up with the policies of Biden-Harris.”

Even some Democrats are acknowledging the impact of the shift.

Laura Curran, the former Nassau County Executive who lost to Blakeman in the last election, has publicly criticized her party’s stance on law enforcement.

Curran, a Democrat who supports the police and opposes New York’s controversial bail reform law, stated that the national Democratic Party’s “defund the police” rhetoric is alienating suburban voters.

“Talking about who is the standard-bearer of your party is really, really important,” Curran said in an interview with Fox News, as reported by TPM.

“That’s why it’s good Biden is gone, and Kamala Harris is in,” she added, possibly unaware that Harris has previously backed police defunding efforts.

The Post highlighted that this trend of suburban dissatisfaction was also evident at a Trump rally in Suffolk County on Wednesday, where he hinted at offering a role in his administration to former Representative Lee Zeldin, a Suffolk County native who unsuccessfully ran against Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022.

The crowd erupted in applause at the suggestion, reflecting the growing support for Trump in these areas.

Despite Hochul’s narrow victory in one of the country’s bluest states, her lackluster win is yet another sign that New York voters, particularly those in the suburbs, are losing faith in Democratic leadership.

Voters are increasingly concerned about key issues such as crime, illegal immigration, taxes and the struggling economy—topics that Trump frequently addresses in his public speeches.

If Trump can continue to galvanize support in areas once considered Democratic strongholds, it could indicate a significant political realignment across the country.
