Kamala Harris has once again proven that she is utterly hilarious to people named Kamala Harris, cracking up in laughter at an expletive-spiced quip she made about privilege and seizing opportunities during an event on Monday.
These remarks came during a question-and-answer session with comedian Jimmy Yang during Harris’s appearance at the annual Legislative Leadership Summit of the Asian-Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). During their discussion, Harris alluded to situations in which opportunities might not be readily available for purportedly marginalized people and admonished the audience to seize those opportunities anyway, using a neat metaphor and PG-13 language to underscore the point.
“We have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open; sometimes they won’t—and then you need to kick that f*cking door down!”
Unlike some of Kamala’s other attempts at being funny, this remark drew some measure of laughter and applause from the audience there assembled. Kamala herself succumbed to a mirthful fit of laughter at her own remark, leaning over with her hand against her chest and adding, “Excuse my language!” while Yang pumps his fist in the air in celebration.
“We gotta make t-shirts with that saying, ‘kick the f*cking door down,'” Yang added.
“Here’s the thing about breaking barriers. Breaking barriers does not mean you start on one side of the barrier and you end up on the other side. There’s breaking involved, and when you break things you get cut. And you may bleed. And it is worth it every time,” Harris added.
While Harris’s latest quip did not fall completely flat, the Vice President’s attempts at wit and humor have often been received less warmly. Last year, Harris raised eyebrows with a bizarre and difficult-to-comprehend digression about a certain palm fruit tree while discussing the importance of “context.”
“My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” After saying this, Kamala broke out into seemingly uncontrolled nervous laughter, while the audience was mostly silent. This comment seemed to invite more bemusement than amusement, and Harris was widely mocked on social media after so saying.
