President-elect Donald Trump announced on Nov. 9, via his social media platform Truth Social, that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would not be part of his new administration. Trump appreciated their past contributions but stated that he would be forming a new Cabinet without them.

Haley, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during Trump’s first term, had previously expressed both support and criticism of the former president. She praised his policies over those of Vice President Kamala Harris but did not shy away from highlighting her differences with Trump on certain issues. Pompeo, who held the dual roles of Secretary of State and CIA Director, endorsed Trump in an open letter alongside over 400 national security officials, criticizing the current administration’s policies.

Trump’s statement regarding Haley and Pompeo comes as he prepares for the 2024 presidential election, during which he is actively assembling his new Cabinet. The exclusion of both prominent figures was unexpected, considering ongoing speculations about their possible returns. Although he did not provide specific reasons for their exclusion, Trump expressed gratitude for their service throughout his first term.

Haley’s recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal emphasized her conditional support for Trump’s campaign, affirming her alignment with many of his views while still making clear her independent stance on various policy matters. As public reactions unfold, the implications of Trump’s decisions regarding cabinet appointments are sparking discussions within Republican circles about party dynamics moving forward.

In the wake of this announcement, key figures expected to join Trump’s administration include Susie Wiles, who has been appointed as White House Chief of Staff, marking a noteworthy first staffing decision. This move reflects a strategy aimed at consolidating leadership ahead of the election, while also raising questions about the potential reshaping of the administration.
